Registered Charity Number 1169277, The Horses' Sanctuary..
the primary Cornish Sanctuary for rescued Bodmin Moor Ponies......
We are delighted to have Will Young as our patron to Shires Holt Horse Sanctuary.. Will is passionate about animal welfare and works tirelessly campaigning, and supporting us.. We are so very grateful for all that Will has done for us..
Devon Haylage are sponsoring us.. This is great news for our horses and the Sanctuary.. It is a premium product and all of our horses love it.. Some Haylage facts:
Advantages of haylage vs hay
Haylage is dust free – healthier and no need to soak
• Haylage bales are denser – less storage required
• Haylage bales are wrapped in polythene – can be stored outside
• Haylage is more palatable than hay – more enjoyable and less wastage
• Haylage has a higher nutritional value – need less purchased feed
• Haylage is a more natural feed and more easily digested - horses prefer wetter forages (many horses dip their own hay)
• Haylage is more cost-effective
You can order from ourselves here at Shires Holt via contact page or do check out Devon Haylage website..
Our moorland rescue ponies can't get enough of this Haylage, we feed all our horses at Shires Holt on this as it is so beneficial to them.. As hay can be so hit and miss we need consistency, quality as we believe the horses should have the best.. It is also much more cost effective.. With so many mouths to feed it is win win..
BODMIN MOOR PONY APPEAL
We rescued over 40 Bodmin Moor ponies and foals last winter and we are making preparations for this coming winters casualties. Like last year we will not leave any ponies or foals behind, forgotten and suffering. We need your support. Please donate what you can.
Another happy herd settled in..
This is a little herd of rescued Moorland ponies.. When we collected them they were all in very poor condition, starved with body scores between 0.5 and 1.. They have been successfully rehabilitated. After months of our care they are now enjoying their new life as a natural herd on the moor in their foster home..
Documentary to be made of our work on the Moor and other other wonderful rescues..
Two very special friends Gaëlle Mourre and Irene Gomez Emilsson came all the way down from London to visit Shires Holt meeting friends, supporters and of course our horses to shoot a documentary about the work we do.. Thank you ever so much.. We are very grateful and very excited..
ESSENTIAL FENCING MAINTENANCE.
Getting in the start of the essential winter feed: We still need more, please do get in touch if you can help..
26., doesn't look a day over 10!
Our gorgeous fellow Valient who is at least 26 years young, he has been with us 18 years.. Was having a lovely time today in the lovely sunshine.
The welfare work continues..
It is absolutely essential that we maintain these natural pony herds.. It is just not enough to rescue a handful and domesticate them in stables.. Although that is important for the well being of the individual pony, we must not neglect the countless others.. We now have 8 herds of last winters rescued ponies and foals living in wonderful locations ,.. We have saved over 40 moorland ponies and foals from last winters awful scenario, and along side top animal welfare organisations we will do so again this winter if necessary.. We have found mixing feral with riding horses that the ferals gained much confidence quickly and become very easy to handle, it has worked beautifully..

Our little Toffee Tofaye settling in with Ella..
Our little orphan foal Toffee Tofaye, with his foster mum Ella.. Tofaye has become quite a local celebrity , and we are very much looking forward to stepping out with him during the summer in Tintagel..
Where in this wide world can man find nobility without pride,
friendship without envy, or beauty without vanity?
Here where grace is laced with muscle and strength by gentleness confined.
He serves without servility; he has fought without enmity.
There is nothing so powerful, nothing less violent;
there is nothing so quick, nothing more patient.
England’s past has been borne on his back.
All our history is in his industry.
We are his heirs;
He is our inheritance.
